The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. A three-judge bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao said the trial is not going to be completed anytime soon. "The allegation made against the petitioner is that she planned the murder in view of the live in relationship of her daughter with Rahul Mukerjea, who was the son of Peter Mukerjea and his earlier wife," the bench said. "We are not making comments on the merits of the case. Even if 50 per cent witnesses are given by prosecution, the trial would not be over soon.  She will be released on bail subject to satisfaction of the trial court. The same conditions imposed on Peter Mukerjea will also be imposed on her," the bench also comprising Justices B R Gavai and A S Bopanna said. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appeared for Indrani Mukerjea, who is currently lodged at the Byculla women's prison in Mumbai following her arrest in August...

Gyanvapi discovery: Is it a Shivling or fountain?

Image
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed at the Gyanvapi complex, where the ‘Shivling’ is said to have been found from the ‘wazukhana’ (ablution pond), and CRPF personnel will guard the area round-the-clock. This follows an interim order by the Supreme Court, which directed the District Magistrate of Varanasi to ‘ensure the protection of the area’ in the Gyanvapi-shringar Gauri complex, where the ‘Shivling’ was found during the survey by court-appointed commissioners on Monday.   The bench of Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha, however, refused to stay the proceedings on the Gyanvapi controversy going on before the court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) in Varanasi. The apex court was hearing an application by Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, which looks after the management of Gyanvapi mosque, seeking a stay on the proceedings in the local court, alleging that the Civil Judge had issued a series of orders which are unconstitutional. This plea for st...

China Jet Crash Was Intentional, Suggests Black Box Data: Report

Image
Flight data from a black box recovered from the China Eastern Airlines jet that crashed in March indicates someone in the cockpit intentionally crashed the plane, the   Wall Street Journal   reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with US officials' preliminary assessment. A Western official told Reuters that the focus is on the actions of the crew after the preliminary investigation did not find any indication of a technical malfunction. Boeing Co, the maker of the jet, declined to comment and referred questions to Chinese regulators. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) did not immediately comment. In March, the Boeing 737-800 jet, which was en route from Kunming to Guangzhou, crashed in the mountains of Guangxi, after a sudden plunge from cruising altitude, killing all 123 passengers and nine crew members aboard. It was mainland China's deadliest aviation disaster in 28 years. In mid-April, China Eastern resumed use of the 737-800 planes. In a summary of i...
